Birding along Rose Creek

Every holiday season I lead a few bird walks along the Pacific Beach portion of Rose Creek. This time of year is full of winter visitors as well as our local birds. The winter visitors come down from Alaska and Canada to spent a few months in beautiful Pacific Beach. Can you blame them? At any rate, this year in addition to the local Osprey, Great Blue Heron’s, Great Egrets, and Snowy Egrets, we spotted Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, and a bird I have not yet been able to identify. It looks a bit like the Northern Pintail, but has a white band around it’s head from top to bottom. I haven’t gotten a good photo of it yet, but there’s still time.

Enjoy this photo of a Northern Pintail pair (and no I did no take this photo).

City Nature Challenge April 27-30

City Nature Challenge, which takes place from April 27-30, 2018, is a worldwide competition to see which city can make the most observations of their local plants and animals over a 4-day period. And San Diego composes part of one of only 35 biodiversity hotspots in the world, so we should have this in the bag!City Nature Challenge Graphic

The global event is organized by Natural History Museum of Los Angeles and California Academy of Sciences, and The Nat is spearheading our local effort. The goal is to document as many species as possible via your smartphone. The event begins Friday, April 27 at 12 AM PT and ends Monday, April 30 at 11:59 PM PT.

The Friends of Rose Creek is hosting a BioBlitz o Sunday, April 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  The more people participate and the more observations each of you makes, the more likely we are to elevate the biodiversity information on Rose Creek.
