Imaginal Mythology

In a culture that privileges scientific-based approaches to health, happiness, and well-being, using imaginally based approaches offers a critical redress to the imbalance and allows us to work through life’s challenges creatively. Using Imaginal Mythology allows us to tap into images, ideas, emotions, and sensations with our waking minds in much the same manner in which dreams tap into our sleeping mind.

One-to-one sessions are designed to open up your imaginal brain and help you engage in mythic thinking about your own life, the lives of your loved ones, and/or our culture at large.

Each session is one hour in length. We meet via phone, FaceTime, Skype, or in person in the San Diego area.

During our session, I ask questions about a situation with which you are concerned or even struggling to understand. I then reflect on the topics and issues we have discussed. Within one week, I provide guidance on myths that address the topics and issues with which you expressed concern along with insights from a wide range of thinkers in fields like depth psychology, philosophy, and a variety of inter-disciplinary sources. In some cases, I will provide the texts of the myths , in other cases, such as where material is copyrighted, I will provide information on the books containing them. You can then check them out from the library or purchase them at your local bookseller.

[Myths] “function as agencies for release of emotional charges, but also as agencies for learning the ‘something more’ about human cultural desires and possibilities.” William G. Doty

I then ask that you read the mythic narrative and engage the material by journal writing, painting, or engaging in the creative endeavor of your choice. The outward expression of our interaction with the myth is a critical component of engaging the imaginal mind.

I will provide writing prompts to help you deeply explore the myths and which provide a container for journal writing. Address the writing prompt or explore anything else that intrigues you. Feel free to use a paper or electronic journal. Use drawings, stickers and images to express yourself in your journal. No one but you will ever read what you write, so be free! Do not worry about grammar, punctuation or complete sentences. Write with reckless abandon! Write like a first grader. The process not the product matters most!

“If we fail to nourish our souls, they wither, and without soul, life ceases to have meaning…. The creative process shrivels in the absence of continual dialogue with the soul. And creativity is what makes life worth living.”
~~ Marion Woodman

Sessions are $100.00.  In order to make my services accessible to everyone, I offer a sliding scale and/or trade for services. Please feel free to ask.

Rational thinking only takes humanity so far. Re-engaging with the imaginal mind is a way of developing a new perspective on an old problem.

I also offer in-person workshops on different topics in San Diego and surrounding areas. Check out my upcoming sessions on the Events page or contact me to design a custom workshop for your group or business.
